Problems with text messaging

Hi--

I am using my friend's old iPad (he's on Verizon and I'm on AT&T. I have permission to use his data) . Trouble occurs when I try to send messages to certain contacts. It switches from SMS (blue) to MMS (green) and fails. No BLOBs (pictures or images) just plain text. Why does it switch from SMS to MMS? How can I prevent it?

I took the latest update iOS 9.3.4. I am not tech savvy, simple answers please????

SMS & MMS are both green. MMS can include photos while SMS cannot.

iMessage is blue and can only be sent to other Apple devices which have iMessage turned on. Changing to a contact which isn't using an Apple device with iMessage would explain why it switches to green. I don't know why it isn't sending the photo however.
